How to Record Audio in Ubuntu 22.04?

Method 1: Using the GNOME-Sound-Recorder

The gnome-sound-recorder needs to be installed on Ubuntu first. The installation and usage processes are defined in this section.

Install GNOME-Sound-Recorder

First, update the packages of the repository by using the command:

$ sudo apt update

It can be installed using the apt package manager as shown below:

$ sudo apt install gnome-sound-recorder -y

Use GNOME-Sound-Recorder

After installing the Gnome-sound-recorder, go to the search menu of the application’s menu and type “sound”, then the icon of the sound recorder will be displayed:

Click on the icon to launch the application:

To record the audio using the gnome-sound-recorder, click on the “Record button”:

When the audio is recorded, click on the stop button to stop the audio and save it by using some file name:

To play the recorded audio, click on the recorded file and then press on the play button:

The recorded audio file can be exported to any directory of the computer by clicking on the “Export” button:

Remove GNOME-sound-Recorder

To uninstall the gnome-sound-recorder, use the purge option of the ap package manager:

$ sudo apt purge gnome-sound-recorder -y

The gnome-sound-recorder package has been removed with all its configuration files from Ubuntu.

Method 2: Using the Audio Recorder

The Audio Recorder is another useful utility for recording audio in Ubuntu. This utility is not installed by default, so we need to install it before using it.

Installing Audio Recorder

First, add the PPA of Audio Recorder using the command:

$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:audio-recorder/ppa

After adding the PPA repository of Audio Recorder, the packages will be updated using the command:

$ sudo apt update

When all the packages are updated, then we can install the Audio Recorder using the apt package manager by running the command:

$ sudo apt install audio-recorder -y

Launch and Use Audio Recorder to Record Audio

After the installation is completed, go to the search bar of the Application and type “audio”:

Click on the icon of the Audio Recorder to launch the application. When the application is launched, click on the “Start Recording” button to start the recording:

When the recording is completed, stop it by clicking on the “Stop recording” button:

Remove the Audio Recorder Package

If there is no need for the audio recorder then uninstall it using the command:

$ sudo apt purge audio-recorder -y

The package of the audio recorder has been removed from Ubuntu.
